We’re in the Streets for the 5th Time in Los Angeles

This week, while we hoped to celebrate April 23—National Sovereignty and Children’s Day—we’re living through a time when the will of the people is ignored and opposition presidential candidates are imprisoned.
​It has now been one month since the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. A mayor elected three times by the people remains behind bars on baseless charges.
Meanwhile, rumors are circulating that government-appointed trustees (kayyum) may be assigned not only to Istanbul and Ankara’s municipalities but also to the main opposition party headquarters, CHP. These rumors have crashed the stock market and further shaken public trust in the future.
But the principle “Sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the nation” must not remain just words on paper—it must be true in life as well.
In Samandağ, Hatay, land deeds are being annulled. Press freedoms are under growing threat. Journalists and teachers are being punished. Even 14-year-olds are taking to the streets to support their teachers. Young people and children are being arrested. In this country, even thinking has become a crime.
Every vote cast by every citizen is valuable, and we will not accept those votes being ignored. “Sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the nation,” first declared by Atatürk at the opening of the Grand National Assembly in 1920, is more than just a constitutional clause—it is the foundation of a government based on the free will of the people.
As Turkish citizens living abroad, we travel to our designated consulates to vote during elections. On the U.S. West Coast, citizens travel from Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, and Oregon—thousands of kilometers—just to cast a single vote. They take time off work, pay for flights and accommodation, and vote at the ballot boxes set up at the Los Angeles Consulate. When votes cast with such effort and sacrifice are dismissed through the arrest of elected officials or the imposition of trustees, it is not just the law that is violated—it is sovereignty itself that is usurped.
That is why we are here.
Because every vote is not just a preference—it is a declaration of sovereignty.
And we will not stay silent as that sovereignty is stolen.
We stand with everyone in Turkey defending democracy. We stand with everyone outside Turkey defending democracy. To Boston, New York, Washington DC, Boca Raton, Vancouver, Toronto, and every city taking to the streets—we salute you. To the farmers in Yozgat—we salute you.
It’s been a month. We haven’t forgotten. We won’t forget. We won’t be silent.
We hope this will be our last protest. But if needed, we will pursue this cause for democracy to the very end.

Los Angeles’ta  5. kez Sokaktayız
Hâlâ protesto etmek zorunda kalmak gücümüze gidiyor… 
​Bu hafta 23 Nisan Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı’nı kutlamayı umarken, halkın iradesinin hiçe sayıldığı, muhalif cumhurbaşkanı adaylarının tutuklandığı bir dönemden geçiyoruz. İBB Başkanı Ekrem İmamoğlu’nun tutukluluğunda bir ay geride kaldı. Halkın üç kez seçtiği bir başkan, sudan gerekçelerle hâlâ cezaevinde.

Bir yandan hem İstanbul hem de Ankara büyükşehir belediyelerine, hem de CHP Genel Merkezi’ne kayyum atanacağı iddiaları dolaşımda. Bu söylentiler borsayı çökertti, halkın geleceğe güvenini daha da sarstı. Oysa “Egemenlik kayıtsız şartsız milletindir” ilkesi yalnızca kâğıt üzerinde değil, hayatta da geçerli olmalıdır.

Hatay, Samandağ’da tapular iptal ediliyor. Basına yönelik baskılar artıyor; gazeteciler ve öğretmenler cezalandırılıyor. 14 yasındaki çocuklar, öğretmenlerine destek için sokaklara dökülüyor. Gençler, çocuklar tutuklanıyor. Bu ülkede artık düşünmek bile suç sayılıyor. 
Halkın iradesi ve sandıklara gelen her bir vatandaşın oyu kıymetlidir ve bu oyların hiçe sayılmasına razı gelmeyeceğiz. “Egemenlik kayıtsız şartsız milletindir” sözü, kurucumuz Atatürk’ün 1920’de Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi’nin açılışında ifade ettiği bir ilke olmanın ötesinde, yalnızca bir anayasa maddesi değil, halkın özgür iradesine dayalı bir yönetim biçiminin temelidir.

Biz yurtdışında yaşayan Türk vatandaşları olarak, seçim dönemlerinde oyumuzu kullanmak için bağlı bulunduğumuz konsolosluklara gidiyoruz. ABD’nin batı yakasında Alaska’dan, Hawaii’den, Arizona’dan, Oregon’dan gelen vatandaşlar, sadece tek bir oy kullanabilmek için binlerce kilometre yol kat ediyor; işinden izin alıyor, uçak bileti ve konaklama masrafına katlanarak Los Angeles Başkonsolosluğu’nda kurulan sandıklarda oy veriyor. Bu kadar büyük bir özveriyle kullanılan oylar; halkın seçtiği başkanlar tutuklanarak, partilere kayyum atanarak yok sayılıyorsa—bu yalnızca hukukun değil, egemenliğin de gaspıdır.
O yüzden buradayız.
Çünkü her oy, yalnızca bir tercih değil, egemenliğe sahip çıkma iradesidir.
Ve biz bu iradenin gasp edilmesine sessiz kalmayacağız.
Türkiye’de demokrasiye sahip çıkan herkesin yanındayız. Yurtdışından Türkiye’deki demokrasiye sahip çıkan herkesin yanındayız.  Boston’a, New York’a, Washington DCye, Boca Raton’a, Vancouver’a, Toronto’ya ve sokağa çıkacak bütün şehirlere  selam olsun! Yozgat’taki çiftçiye selam olsun!

Bir ay oldu, unutmadık. Unutmayacağız. Susmayacağız.
Umarız bu son toplantımız olur, ama gerektiği sürece, sonuna kadar demokrasi davamızın takipçisi olacağız.
