The Turkish community in Los Angeles is once again standing up against injustice.
We first came together on March 18, 2025, to protest the unjust imprisonment of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and the annulment of his university diploma in an attempt to keep him from running for presidency.
Today, not only İmamoğlu, but at least 301 young people, most of them university students, have also been detained simply for protesting these injustices.
Many of them have reported being subjected to torture during detention. Our hearts ache as we think about the conditions they are in.
Our minds and hearts are in Turkey: in Saraçhane, in Silivri, and with the youth.
We will continue to be the voice of those silenced in Turkey. We will not give up.

That is why this Sunday, April 6, the Turkish community in Los Angeles is coming together for the third time.
On April 2, under the leadership of students, one of the largest consumer boycotts in Turkey’s history took place. The youth declared, “We won’t buy anything for one day.”
The CHP, the public, and even some small business owners joined in by closing their shops in solidarity. The people used their economic power to send a clear message: we do not accept this injustice.
But even this peaceful boycott was met with intolerance. Websites announcing the boycott were shut down by court order. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched investigations against those who called for the boycott, labeling this act of civil disobedience as “hate and discrimination.”
How can people be criminalized for simply not shopping? In this economic crisis, when no one has money to spend anyway, how can you force people to shop? People in Turkiye are living under both economic and political pressure.
But we will not be silent. We will continue to stand with everyone who loves this country, who seeks justice, and who chooses to raise their voice through peaceful means.
Here we are. See us. Hear us. Take note.

Los Angeles’taki Türk toplumu, adaletsizliğe karşı bir kez daha ayakta.
İlk kez 18 Mart 2025’te, İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Ekrem İmamoğlu’nun haksız yere tutuklanmasını ve Cumhurbaşkanlığı adaylığının engellenmesi amacıyla üniversite diplomasının iptal edilmesini protesto etmek için 3. kez bir araya geldi.
Bugün ise, İmamoğlu ve birçok kişinin hâlâ haksız yere içeride tutulması yetmezmiş gibi, bu adaletsizliklere karşı sokağa çıkan, çoğu üniversite öğrencisi olan 300’den fazla gencin tutuklu olması öfkemizi büyütüyor. Gençlerin birçoğu gözaltında işkenceye uğradığını anlatıyor. Onların hangi koşullarda olduğunu düşündükçe kalbimiz sıkışıyor.
Aklımız da, kalbimiz de Türkiye’de: Saraçhane’de, Silivri’de ve gençlerde.
Türkiye’de susturulmak istenenlerin sesi olmaya devam edeceğiz.

Bu yüzden bu Pazar, 6 Nisan’da, Los Angeles’taki Türk toplumu olarak üçüncü kez bir araya geliyoruz.
2 Nisan’da, öğrencilerin öncülüğünde Türkiye tarihinin en büyük tüketici boykotlarından biri gerçekleşti. Gençler, “Bir günlüğüne hiçbir şey satın almıyoruz” dediler. CHP, halk, hatta bazı esnaf bile dükkanlarını açmayarak boykota destek verdi. Halk, ekonomik gücünü kullanarak bu adaletsizliğe razı olmadığını ilan etti.
Ama bu barışçıl boykota bile tahammül edilmedi. İstanbul Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı, bu sivil itaatsizlik çağrılarını “nefret ve ayrımcılık” olarak niteleyerek boykot çağrısı yapanlara soruşturma başlattı, internet sitelerini kapattı.
İnsanlar alışveriş yapmadı diye nasıl suçlu olabilir? Bu enflasyon ortamında, zaten kimsenin cebinde para yokken vatandaş alışverişe nasıl zorlanabilir ki? Halk hem ekonomik hem de siyasi baskı altında daha ne kadar dayanabilir?
Ama biz susmayacağız. Türkiye’yi seven, adalet isteyen, barışçıl yollarla sesini duyurmaya çalışan herkesin yanındayız. Buradayız.
